Description

Chico State Basic Needs is a collaborative effort of campus and community groups with the goal to improve student success and positively engage the community through the provision of supplemental food, meals, emergency grants, housing, referral services, research-based education, and appropriate policy for students experiencing food insecurity, hunger, displacement, homelessness and poverty.

The California State University 2018 Study of Student Basic Needs reported that 50% of Chico State students (approximately 8,000 students) experience low (24%) to very low (26%) food security. Poor nutrition resulting from food insecurity is a symptom of increasing student poverty. This is a major barrier to student persistence, retention, and graduation. This is why the Basic Needs project is imperative to support the long-term success of our students.

Thanks to you...

This year, the Hungry Wildcat Food Pantry has remained open and will serve 4,000 students by distributing enough food to make more than 120,000 healthy meals.

Thanks to your generous support, we continue to purchase directly from the Organic Vegetable Project at the University Farm, distributing more than 10 tons of local, organic produce annually.

This year, Basic Needs will rapidly re-house more than 50 actively homeless students and provide cased managed wrap around student services to more than 800 students.

To help house homeless students, Basic Needs now manages 1 short-term transitional house through University Housing and 3 permanent houses in Chico through the Chico Housing Action Team.

In cooperation with the College of Business, Basic Needs is proactively addressing student financial stress by offering financial literacy and peer-led financial advising for students to take charge of their finances and budget for their success.

Thanks to you, we will provide an estimated $50,000 in basic needs grants and employment opportunities for students who are experiencing unexpected financial crisis and in need of temporary employment.

Chico State Basic Needs is powered by you!

Since the opening of the Hungry Wildcat Food Pantry in 2013, thousands of supporters have generously stepped up to help Basic Needs provide food, housing, and financial assistance to more than 25,000 Chico State students who find themselves struggling with life’s basics.

Simply, it’s tough to learn and finish a degree when you’re worrying about your next meal or a safe place to sleep. Research continues to demonstrate what we already know - that rates of food, housing and financial insecurity are increasing amongst college students, especially those coming from low income backgrounds and those who lack any family support.
